Portugal has two parallel systems: the public SNS (Serviço Nacional de Saúde) and a broad network of private clinics. Most residents use both, depending on the situation.
The public SNS system
The SNS provides affordable care (often free or with a small co-payment) to residents. The main entry point is your local health center (centro de saúde), where you're assigned a family doctor.
How to get a utente number
Your número de utente is your ID in the healthcare system. To get one, visit your local health center with:
- Your passport and proof of legal status (residence card / comprovativo)
- Your NIF and, usually, your NISS (social security number)
- Proof of your address
Private healthcare and insurance
Private clinics (including large nationwide chains) offer faster access to specialists and often English-speaking service. Many people take out private health insurance alongside the SNS. Note: to obtain a visa at the outset you need private health insurance with coverage from €30,000.
Pharmacies and emergency care
Pharmacies (farmácia) are everywhere and often help with basic issues. For emergencies, call 112. EU tourists can use the EHIC card, but to live here you need full status and SNS registration.
SNS registration procedures can vary by region. Check the requirements at your local health center or reach out to us.
